Malta Catholic Action

  • Catholic Action was launched by Pope Pius XI in December 1922 by means of his Encyclical Ubi Arcano. Seven years later, on the 5th April 1929, Prof. Fr Daniel Callus OP set up the first Malta Catholic Action group among University students and a year later, in October 1930, Mgr. Enrico Dandria organised some of the existing youth groups into a Federation of Catholic Action Centres. Catholic Action is an organisation of lay people who freely commit themselves, as an organic community and in direct collaboration with the Hierarchy, to work for the fulfilment of the general apostolic aim of the Church.

Malta Catholic Action embraces adults and youths divided in various branches which are found in most parishes. Other initiatives include the following:

      • Secretariat for Social Assistance (SAS) (tel. 2122 0286)
      • Commission for the sick and persons with disabilities
      • the pubblication of Il-Leħen, a Catholic weekly newspaper

Malta Catholic Action was instrumental in the founding of Dar tal-Providenza, a complex including Villa Mons. Gonzi, Villa Papa Giovanni and Villa Papa Luciani, homes for persons with disabilities. The Secretariat for Social Assistance offers its minibus service to all parish groups who organize outings for the elderly. A ‘Meals on Wheels’ service is organised in several parishes in cooperation with the Maltese Cross Corps – the service is supported financially by the civil authorities
