• The Holy Father, Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Charles J. Scicluna, Titular Bishop of San Leone, as Archbishop of Malta. This was announced by the Apostolic Nuncio, His Excellency, Mgr Aldo Cavalli, during a press conference held on Friday 27th February 2015, at the Archbishop’s Curia, Floriana.

    The Apostolic Nuncio introduced the Archbishop-elect to the College of Consultors, to the Curia officials and staff, and to the media.

    His Grace Archbishop-elect Mgr Charles J. Scicluna will succeed Archbishop Emeritus Mgr Paul Cremona O.P., who resigned on the 18th October 2014 for health reasons. On that same day, the Holy Father, Pope Francis appointed Bishop Charles J. Scicluna as Apostolic Administrator sede vacante.

  • In his first comments, following the official announcement of his appointment, Archbishop-elect Mgr Charles J. Scicluna expressed his gratitude to the Holy Father, Pope Francis, and thanked him for having entrusted him with the mission as shepherd of the Diocese of Malta. The Archbishop-elect gave his greetings to the people of Malta and Gozo, his brother Bishops, the clergy, members of religious Orders and lay people, and all persons of goodwill. He promised to lay down his life for them, following the example of Jesus, the Good Shepherd.
