    Historical Background

On the 3rd of March 1965, George Grima held the first meeting where only twelve people were present.  He explained his goals and why this community should be called “Fergħa Ewkaristika”.  The first few meetings were held at his house No. 23, Triq is-Salib, Marsa, in a room where he had an altar.  All the meetings were held there for more than seventeen years.

The founder was a member of the MUSEUM society and he also served as an altar boy at the MUSEUM chapel in Blata l-Bajda.  St. Ġorg Preca recognised his good qualities and he also foresaw that he was going to be a leading a group.

After withdrawing from the MUSEUM, George Grima was known as a humble man, always praying, silently suffering and he was requested for his wise advices.  A person was ready to wait hours to get the chance to talk to him.  One of his famous advice was – Let God lead the way.

Fergħa Ewkaristika was officially founded on the 9th of September 1965.  An inauguration mass was celebrated by the Bishop Emmanuel Galea together with the chaplain Dun Gużepp Mifsud Bonnici at the MUSEUM chapel, Blata L-Bajda.

Throughout the years, Fergħa Ewkaristika kept growing further.  The meetings were being attended by men of all ages, women of all status and youngsters.  Several conferences and adorations were being held in various parish churches throughout Malta and Gozo.  This growth required a new place were to meet and in March 1982, the Chapel “Centru Ewkaristiku” in Marsa was inaugurated.  This chapel was blessed by Archbishop Gużeppi Mercieca and consequently all the meetings were being held here.  The chapel also opened its doors for mass, adorations and other prayers.

In 1986, George Grima also founded the community of “Ulied Marija Ewkaristika”.  It consists of a group of women who not only dedicate their lifes to the Eucharist, but also take care of the chapel with great devotion.  “Dar Marija Ewkaristika” in Żebbuġ was built as a residence for them and it is known as an extension of the chapel in Marsa.

The founder, George Grima was born in Marsa on the 28th of July 1941 and died suddenly on the 7th of May 1999 around 3pm.  He died in May, the month dedicated to Our Lady of the Eucharist – whose feast falls on the 13th of May.  On that day his funeral was celebrated by over seventy priests who had given service at the chapel.  The funeral was celebrated at Marsa Parish Church.

Although passing through a difficult patch, today sixteen years later after George Grima’s death, the chapel still opens its doors regularly.  Each Friday and Saturday there is mass and adoration and every first Friday of the month there is a night adoration which is also transmitted on Radju Marija.
